We spent most of the morning making love, and then we showered together. Brandon got out first, and while I washed my hair, he fixed us a late breakfast. I was sitting down beside him to eat when my cell rang, showing Avery’s newly added contact information on the screen. I passed the phone to Brandon, who turned it on speaker mode when he answered it.

“Avery, what’s up?”

A woman’s voice gasped, then excitedly spoke. “Brandon! Are you still at Nadia’s apartment? Avery. Avery! He’s still at her apartment, I think they worked it out,” she said, sounding muffled as she spoke to someone in the background.

Brandon and I both lifted an eyebrow, but I pretended to keep my eyes focused on my plate.

“Tori! What are you talking about?” Brandon was scowling at the phone, not touching his food.

“Well…don’t be mad.”

“Ah, shit.”

“But Avery and I may have told a few little white lies to try to get you and Nadia back together.”

I heard Avery in the background. “Hey, this shit was your idea, don’t include me.”

Tori sucked her teeth. “Oh, hush. You did all of the implementing, and you’re the one who called and asked what you should do. And it worked.”

“What worked?” Brandon asked. “Did you motherfuckers drug me?”

“No. You got drunk completely on your own, you did misplace your keys, and you did puke on your phone. The only thing we did was fib about you asking to be taken to Nadia. According to Avery, you were crying because you didn’t think Nadia would take you back.”

“Hey, fuck you, Avery.” Brandon glanced up at me, frowning as I stifled a laugh.

“Don’t be like that, B. We’re all friends, you don’t have to be embarrassed about your feelings for her. It’s completely natural for people to fall in love, and crying about losing it doesn’t make you any less of a man, you know?”

I gave up on trying to pretend I wasn’t listening and openly giggled as I watch Brandon fumble with my phone, trying to turn off the speaker function. “Damnit, Tori, shut up.”

“Excuse you, don’t tell me to shut up. I’m a matchmaker. What did you think was going to happen when you talked to me about this?”

Brandon dropped his head to the counter. “You’re fucking meddlesome is what you are,” he mumbled, glaring at the phone.

Tori laughed. “And you are ungrateful, sir. We’ve been calling Nadia all morning to check on you, and y’all are just now answering. Mm-hmm. We know what your nasty asses have been doing. I hope you took your time with her, Brandon, and didn’t just do a quick…”

“Tori!” I heard Avery say her name in the background at the same time Brandon did, both admonishing her to stop talking.

“What?” she asked. “I’m serious, Brandon. After the way you guys broke up, it’s really important that you make the experience emotional for her, not just physical, so she understands that it’s not just about the sex.”

Brandon looked like he wanted to sink into the floor, so I slid the phone in front of me.
